Thomas Jones (26 September – 29 April ) was a Welsh landscape painter. He was a pupil of Richard Wilson and was best-known in his lifetime as a painter of Welsh and Italian landscapes in the style of his master. However, Jones&#;s reputation grew in the 20th century when more unconventional works by him, ones not been intended for public consumption, came to light. Most notable among these is a series of views of Naples which he painted from to By breaking with the conventions of classical landscape painting in favour of direct observation, they look forward to the work of Camille Corot and the Barbizon School in the 19th century. Born 26 September , second son of Thomas and Hannah Jones of Trevonen in Cefnllys, Radnorshire. His parents moved to Pencerrig in Llanelwedd near Builth, which still remains the property of the family. He entered Christ College School at Brecon in and there first developed an interest in pictures and in drawing. He moved in to the school at Llanfyllin, Montgomeryshire, kept by Jenkin Jenkins, and proceeded thence to Jesus College, Oxford, where he matriculated 11 July It was intended that he should take holy orders, but on the death of John Hope, his mother's uncle, in , he left Oxford and devoted himself to painting.
He entered William Shipley's drawing school in the Strand, London, then directed by Henry Pars, in November , and in March he became Richard Wilson's pupil, agreeing to pay Wilson fifty guineas for two years' tuition. He w
