The Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation (SBTHP) is proud to partner with Sullivan Goss Gallery and local photographer William B. Dewey to present Orpha Klinker and Bill Dewey: Landmarks of California at Casa de la Guerra (15 East De la Guerra Street,

Santa Barbara) on display July 18 through October 19,   Enjoy an opening reception on Thursday, August 7 from p.m. to p.m., a free First Thursday event.

 

Orpha Mae Klinker () painted these oil and watercolors of nineteenth-century structures in her “Landmarks of California” series between and Klinker lectured with these paintings around the State in an effort to support the nascent California Historic Landmark Registration Program, and many were published in the Los Angeles Times. In , renowned local photographer William B. Dewey captured images of the same sites, continuing Klinker’s project of documenting California’s historic resources. The paintings and photographs of each site are paired in this exhibit, and speak to the ongoing value of historic preservation.

Orpha’s own legacy as an artist is pegged to her life in California. During her lifetime, she created an immense portfolio that documents Los Angeles history, mostly in the form of portraits—she painted countless city leaders and icons, everyone from the mayor to local legend Death Valley Scotty. She was also known for etchings and illustrations of landscapes and architecture, California landmarks and deserts. Through her subject matter, Klinker became recognized as somewhat of an expert on early California history.

Collections

Orpha Klinker (), painter, printmaker, writer, illustrator and historian, was born in Fairfield, Iowa on November 20, Her family moved to California when Orpha was a small child, eventually settling in San Bernardino. She studied art in Los Angeles at Polytechnic High School, University of California and Cannon Art School. Klinker began her career as a commercial artist, but Paris beckoned and she continued her studies at the Julian and Colarossi Academies. After a year abroad Klinker worked in New York and Philadelphia before returning to Los Angeles in the mid s.

It was in Southern California that Klinker was able to devote herself to her main interests: history and the desert. Known primarily as a portraitist, historical and desert painter, Klinker was also a preservationist. She recorded in painting the early adobe structures of Southern California and promoted, though her lectures, the California Historic Landmark Registration Program. It wasn't until the late s that she began etching, but even her earliest efforts won recognition.
