Biographie Leif Segerstam (né le 2 mars à Vaasa) est un musicien, chef d'orchestre et compositeur finlandais.
Il fait ses études de violon et piano à l&#;Académie Sibelius, puis à la Juilliard School de à Chef d'orchestre au répertoire illimité, il s'est fait connaître dès la fin des années 60 par la direction d'orchestre, d'abord à l'opéra (Helsinki, Stockholm et Berlin Ouest). Il dirige à l'Opéra Metropolitan de New York, à Covent Garden, à la Scala, au Treatro Colón, au Staatsoper de Vienne et au Festival de Salzbourg, Il accompagne Montserrat Caballé, Birgit Nilsson, mais aussi Henryk Szeryng, David Oïstrakh, Emil Gilels et Arthur Rubinstein. The prolific Finnish symphonist and conductor died today aged 80, his son has reported.
After a musical education that he rounded off at Juilliard in New York, Segerstam became chief conductor at Finnish National Opera, and at Stockholm&#;s Royal Opera. A man of prodigious appetites for all of life&#;s pleasures, he had about him an aura that persuaded orchestral musicians to tolerate his flamboyant difference. The Philharmonia Orchestra in London fell under his spell. He held posts in Copenhagen and Vienna. He married two Helsinki musicians and was divorced from both.
If he was not conducting, he sat down to compose. At the last count he had written symphonies, few of them ever performed.
A Segerstam concert was always an experience, never predictable. He was an exceptional interpreter, surprisingly, of Brahms. His Sibelius was more richly coloured than the norm. His abundant size and outspokenness tended to occlude his very unusual musical gifts.
He liked to say he was descended from shamans.

Den finlandssvenske dirigenten, tonsättaren och multiinstrumentalisten Leif Segerstam har dött vid 80 års ålder efter en kort tids sjukdom, rapporterar AFP.
– Det kändes verkligen som om magi kom ur händerna på honom när han dirigerade, säger kompositören Cecilia Damström till Yle, och berättar att han fortsatte komponera under sin sista tid på sjukhus.
Segerstam kallade sig själv ”musikens Jesus”. Han skrev över symfonier och dirigerade orkestrar runtom i världen. I Sverige uppträdde han bland annat på Kungliga Operan och Malmö Opera, var ledamot av svenska Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien och samarbetade med Hovkapellet och Musikhögskolan.

In Jean Sibelius wrote a number of pieces for the Days of the Press. As early as 14th December he used the best pieces in an orchestral suite, which included the overture, Scena, Quasi Bolero and Finale. It was this Finale (referred to around this time also as "Finland Awakes") that became Finlandiawhen an arrangement of it for piano appeared in The Finlandia music was the first of the pieces to be printed, and it quickly became popular all over the world.
