Synopsis
The film progresses along two distinct but interwoven series of events. The first series involves young members of a family who have gathered round their old mother and revive their common childhood memories. the second line focuses on the old woman&#;s preparations for her last journey and her joyous cooperation in arranging for the ceremonies that are to be observed after her death.

As Joanna Hogg releases her starkly autobiographical new work The Souvenir – and in the wake of Pedro Almodóvar’s equally self-examining Pain and Glory () – we take a look at some of the most notable films taken directly from a filmmaker’s own experience.
Dramatised autobiography in early cinema was relatively rare – the first audiences wanted spectacle, not everyday reality. And even when filmmakers did draw on their own histories these tended to be heavily stylised, as with Jean Vigo’s groundbreaking Zéro de conduite (), a deeply misunderstood film in its time.

Released in China only after a two-year ban, Zhang Yuan's debut feature looks at first glance like a Ken Loach 'social problem' movie. It centres on the plight of a woman librarian in Beijing who struggles to bring up her teenage son (retarded since a childhood accident) without help from her absent husband or the state, and juxtaposes that fiction with relevant documentary material.
