FEATURED SONG OF THE WEEK

Dear Companions: The Unthanks

Christmas has arrived early with the release of The Unthanks’ new single Dear Companions. Their hymn to friendship and togetherness will appear on a double album The Unthanks In Winter, due on November Our Song Of The Week at is a comforting complement to the season.

Dear Companions is a described as a parting song that feels as if it has always been with us. Written by Becky Unthank to the old American folk tune of Nettleton, it slowly builds towards a choral climax with the voices of 60 devotees, recorded on one of the band’s beloved Northumberland singing residentials.

‘Saying goodbye can often be hard,’ says Becky, who wrote the song at home in Northumberland with her partner, the Bafta award-winning animator Ainslie Henderson. ‘In its bittersweetness we struggle sometimes to find a satisfying way to part, which is why I’ve always loved the function of a parting song.’

Here we take the time to measure

All the joy and sorrowing

Can you hear me, can your hear me

As the tide is rushing in

All this time we have together

One of the most common projects in elementary school, especially around grades is a biography project or book report.

It can be tricky to find biography books for kids that hit that sweet spot between a picture book and an absolutely overwhelming non-fiction tome (lots of biographies lean too far into the young adult realm and they&#;re just too hefty for an elementary school reader!).

Here are some great options that are interesting, readable and perfect for school or personal reading!

(P.S. If you&#;re looking for biography series like the extremely popular &#;Who Was. . .?&#; series, I have a whole list of favorites here! The books on that list tend to steer a little younger and shorter).

The Great and Only Barnum: The Tremendous, Stupendous Life of Showman P. T. Barnum by Candace Fleming
If your child was obsessed with The Greatest Showman, this book is for them. It is almost unreal how fascinating the real P.T. Barnum was and what a life he lead. I included this one on the family reads section in the Summer Reading Guide. (Full review here)

The Unthanks – In Winter

K

The Unthanks share the rarest of gifts: a willingness to explore and examine the strands that make songs. The Unthanks In Winter combines these threads, weaving a garment that holds onto that musical essence while forging something new, expanding interpretations, and considering the shifting forms of the winter winds. It is a song feast in which the recipes of old have been reinterpreted for the shifting tastes of time.

Opening to the sound of wind and footsteps, In Winter&#;s Night is a piano solo that was initially inspired by the movement &#;In Freezing Winter&#;s Night&#; from Benjamin Brittan&#;s A Ceremony of Carols; clearly, this is not your usual holiday collection. The Christmas tree of O Tannenbaum combines an Adrian McNally piano reading with the air of Vince Guaraldi&#;s Merry Christmas Charlie Brown, with Dan Rogers&#; electric bass adding a dose of the Beach Boys to the proceedings. At the same time, Niopha Keegan&#;s viola provides a centring influence. By the time Becky and Rachel Unthank enter, the shift in sense and sensibility has fully taken hold. While retaining the melody, everything else seems to be in flux.
