Summary of M.C. Escher
Escher broke down the boundaries between art and science by combining complicated mathematics with precise draftsmanship and an eye for the unusual. His work is a combination of intricate realism and fantasy. He is most famous for his 'impossible constructions', images which utilize mathematical shapes, architecture, and perspective to create a visual enigma, but he also produced subtle and original work drawing inspiration from the Italian landscape. Most of Escher's art was produced as prints - lithographs or woodcuts and its appearance and subject matter was quite unique at a time when abstract art was the norm.
Accomplishments
- Despite not having a formal mathematical training, Escher had an intuitive and nuanced understanding of the discipline. He used geometry to create many of his images and incorporated mathematical forms into others. Additionally, some of his prints provide visual metaphors for abstract concepts particularly that of infinity, the depiction of which Escher became interested in later in his career. During his lifetime Escher kept abreast of current ideas in the field and corresponded with several eminent mathematicians on the s
M.C. Escher
Maurits Cornelis Escher (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈmʌurɪts kɔrˈneːlɪs ˈɛsxər]; 17 June – 27 March ), or commonly M. C. Escher, was a Dutch graphic artist who made mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints.
His work features mathematical objects and operations including impossible objects, explorations of infinity, reflection, symmetry, perspective, truncated and stellated polyhedra, hyperbolic geometry, and tessellations. Although Escher believed he had no mathematical ability, he interacted with the mathematicians George Plya, Roger Penrose, Harold Coxeter and crystallographer Friedrich Haag, and conducted his own research into tessellation.
Early in his career, he drew inspiration from nature, making studies of insects, landscapes, and plants such as lichens, all of which he used as details in his artworks. He traveled in Italy and Spain, sketching buildings, townscapes, architecture and the tilings of the Alhambra and the Mezquita of Cordoba, and became steadily more interested in their mathematical structure.
Escher's art became well known among scientists and mathematicians, and in popular culture, especially after it was featuredMaurits Cornelis Escher was an artist from the Netherlands who was known for incorporating mathematical equations into his lithographs and woodcuts. M. C. Escher’s artworks were not that popular during his tenure as an artist, even in his own country. Maurits Cornelis Escher would be 70 years of age before an exhibition of his life’s work was held. M. C. Escher’s paintings would only start to be fully appreciated in the 20th and 21st centuries.
An Introduction to M. C. Escher’s Biography and Art
Escher’s drawings and paintings feature mathematically based concepts such as impossible objects, reflections on perspective, symmetry, and infinity, as well as M. C. Escher’s tessellations. Despite believing that he had no real mathematical ability, he surrounded himself with highly educated people and was adept in many fields of study. M. C. Escher’s artworks are today appreciated by scientists and the general populace alike for both their aesthetic as well as mathematical explorations.

M.C. EscherBest known for his iconic optical illusions, impossible constructions defying logic and his prints playing with patterns and symmetry, Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher’s lithographs, mezzotints, woodcuts and wood engravings express a high level of technical expertise and meticulous attention to detail. His images of upside-down staircases and infinite structures appear on posters, album covers and sci-fi books, although people most likely do not know their origin. Escher remained a relatively unknown figure in the art world and students of geometry and crystallography are more likely to have encountered him than students of art history.
Maurits Cornelis Escher was never an outstanding student and his formal mathematical knowledge was limited to what he received in secondary school. However, his father George, who was a civil engineer, instilled in him a lifelong interest in mathematics and science. Born in the Netherlands in , Escher spent most of his childhood in Arnhem. Aspiring to be an architect, Escher e
