John Desmond Bernal () was born on 10 May He attended Cambridge University, , before working in the Davy Faraday Laboratory, London, He was appointed Lecturer in Structural Crystallography at Cambridge in , and Assistant Director of Research in Crystallography, Cambridge, He was made Professor of Physics at Birkbeck College, University of London, in January During the War Bernal worked in the Ministry of Security, as a member of the Civil Defence Research Committee, ; at Bomber Command, ; and in Combined Operations, April He returned to Birkbeck in , and carried out research at the Davy Faraday Laboratory, before working at the Biomolecular Research Laboratory, Torrington Square, opened in He was made Professor of Crystallography at Birkbeck College in September Bernal retired from Birkbeck in , and died on 15 September

The story opens in when I left my hometown, Vienna, for Cambridge, England, to seek the Great Sage. He was an Irish Catholic converted to Communism, a mineralogist who had turned to X-ray crystallography: J.D. Bernal. I asked the Great Sage : "How can I solve the secret of life".
