John Joseph Gotti Jr. (, Italian: [ˈɡɔtti]; October 27, – June 10, ) was an American gangster and boss of the Gambino crime family in New York City. He ordered and helped to orchestrate the murder of Gambino boss Paul Castellano in December and took over the family shortly thereafter, becoming boss of what has been described as America's most powerful crime syndicate.

Gotti and his brothers grew up in poverty and turned to a life of crime at an early age. Gotti quickly became one of the crime family's biggest earners and a protégé of Gambino family underboss Aniello Dellacroce, operating out of the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens. Following the FBI's indictment of members of Gotti's crew for selling narcotics, Gotti began to fear that he and his brother would be killed by Castellano for dealing drugs. As this fear continued to grow, and amidst growing dissent over the leadership of the crime family, Gotti organized the murder of Castellano.

Early Life

Gotti was born on October 27, , in the South Bronx, New York. Mother, Fannie, and father, J. Joseph Gotti, were both Italian immigrants. Gotti was the fifth of 13 children in a family whose only income came from their father's unpredictable work as a day laborer. Gotti and his family moved frequently before settling in East New York, an area known at the time for its gang activity.

By the age of 12, Gotti was working as an errand boy for an underground club in the neighborhood run by Carmine Fatico. Fatico was a captain in the local Gambino family, the largest of the five organized crime families in New York City. Through his activities with the club, Gotti met Aniello Dellacroce, who became his life-long mentor.

John Gotti is attributed to coming from a family of 13 children, and his father made a living from menial jobs. His income was barely able to sustain the family, and they were residents of the New York district of South Bronx. His parents were named J. Joseph and Fannie Gotti turned 12, he had to complete chores to support the family finances. Gotti worked in an underground entertainment club that was one of the spin-offs of the Gambino family. It was in the course of work here that he met the crime boss, Aniello.  Aniello years down the line became Gotti’s, mentor.

John Gotti moved fast to become the boss of the gang known as ‘Fulton-Rockaway.’ They were into car hijacks, robberies, and related crimes. Though he enrolled at Franklin K. Lane High School, he dropped out early at age On his 18th birthday, John Gotti switched to the gang known as Fatico and turned his attention to working at the coat factory. In the days that followed, he also became a truck driver, but this was not last for long as he found his way back to the crime lane after a while.

Fearing he and his men would be killed by Gambino crime family Boss Paul Castellano for selling drugs, Gotti organized the murder of Castellano in December and took over the family shortly thereafter. One of the key details was waiting for the moment after the death of Aniello Dellacroce, who died a few weeks earlier from natural causes, Dellacroce was underboss of the Gambino crime family.
