“It’s not about selling 12 million copies … the songs still touch me when I sing them or talk about them to this day”: Jethro Tull’s struggle to make Aqualung, in their own words
When Jethro Tull released Aqualung in March , it was perhaps with more of a sense of relief than pride. Their fourth studio album had endured a difficult gestation period – not only had they abandoned two previous recordings, but band leader Ian Anderson had struggled with line-up issues.
Bassist Glenn Cornick was fired while recording was in its early stages, to be replaced by Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond. Keyboardist John Evan was making his first full-time appearance in the studio. Dee Palmer provided orchestration but was yet to join the band, while drummer Clive Bunker was about to bow out. Manager and producer Terry Ellis had attempted to take a more back-seat position, but Anderson called him back.
In they reflected on the band’s highly-regarded and best-selling release – which is often erroneously regarded as a concept album.

Over the years, there have been a fair few writers who have attempted to plumb the unfathomable depths of The Jolly Jethros’ secret lives: not that there is much to plumb. Maybe the odd grubby descent into Jogmania, Pussycatology, or overindulgence at the table of the Great God Hurry Curry.
The first one I remember was an Australian (bloke) who, at the time of “A Passion Play,” wrote some obscure but well-meaning treatise on me as the poet – a thoroughly wasted literary journey since I have a distinct dislike of poetry in general and have never modelled myself on its weird and fanciful practitioners. I believe it was entitled “To Be The Play.” Not many copies have survived, methinks, to grace the book cabinets and libraries of the disciples of Rock. He was a nice man, ‘though and travelled with the band in the great down-under for a few days in , I think I remember.

Jethro Tull is quite a unique name. It&#;s the old agriculturalist, is that right? &#;Well, I know all about that now, but when our agent suggested it back in , I thought he made the name up. I thought it was just some funny name. But it just so happened we stuck with it. Maybe two or three weeks after that, I then learned to my horror that we&#;ve been named after a dead guy who invented a seed drill. Which didn&#;t seem like a passport to instant success with the audiences of the day. But they, like I, probably didn&#;t do history or that period of history at school, so they were oblivious to it as well,&#; Ian Anderson said.
