Who was Hardwicke Knight?
Frederick Hardwicke Knight was a prominent author and photographer from Broad Bay, New Zealand. An acknowledged expert on the history of southern New Zealand, he wrote many books related to early Dunedin and Otago.
Knight spent his formative years in England and in France, where he travelled in the s, before becoming a travelling photographer working throughout Europe, notably spending time as a photojournalist in Stalinist Russia. A conscientious objector, Knight did not serve in the military in World War II, instead being part of the emergency medical services, working under Dunedin-born surgeon Harold Gillies.
In , Knight was appointed Director of Medical Photography at Enfield Hospital in England, and in he emigrated to New Zealand, taking up a position as head of the Medical Photography Department at Otago Medical School. Here he helped develop important photographic techniques for diagnosing eye problems, and in he was elected president of the New Zealand Institute of Medical Photographers.

After the First World War and before life in New Zealand, Knight's work at the NUT supplemented with freelance writing, photography, art work and editing. He was also appointed Director of Medical Photography of Enfield Group Hospitals based at Chase Farm Hospital, Enfield.
Knight's publications include New Zealand's first comprehensive photographic history, many compilations of early Dunedin and Otago photographs, biographies of several early New Zealand photographers and of British photographer William Russell Sedgfield, three books of architectural history and a seminal history of the Otago Peninsula.
Knight was awarded a QSO in An eccentric polymath, he was well known for his striking appearance, his ramshackle Broad Bay cottage crammed with his collections and his self-proclaimed exploits, most notably his claim to have found timbers on Mount Ararat that might have been Noah's Ark.

Hardwicke Knight was born in Stoke Newington three years before the start of World War One. After leaving school at the age of 16 he worked for the National Union of Teachers as an advertising clerk, among other duties organising tours for holidaying teachers and accompanying tours of French battlefields.
Soon after the start of WW2 joined the Friends&#; Ambulance Unit on nursing and fire watching duties. Knight was later seconded to the Emergency Medical Services&#; plastic surgery unit at the Gloucester City General Hospital as a medical photographer.
