Duane Michals was born in Mckeesport, Pennsylvania into a typical working-class environment: his father was a steel worker and his mother a housekeeper. His interest in art began at age 14, when he began taking Saturday-afternoon watercolor classes at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. He received a B.A. from the University of Denver in , and though he made a decision not to pursue a fine-arts career at that time, he developed a keen interest in the work of other artists - particularly surrealist masters such as Magritte, de Chirico and Balthus.
In he attended the Parsons School of Design in New York with thoughts of becoming a graphic designer. After just a year, however, he left and took various jobs in publishing - including working as an assistant art director for Dance magazine and as a designer in the publicity department at Time Inc.
It was during a three-week visit to Russia in that Michals first experienced his love of photography. Using a borrowed camera, he recorded a series of plain, yet elegant portraits of the people he encountered during his travels - images that would lead to his first public exhibition. In a biographica

Duane Slick’s Bio
Visual artist and printmaker Duane Slick is an educator and scholar. Currently a professor of Painting and Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, Prof. Slick defines himself as a first generation Urban Indian. Even though moving comfortably in ‘mainstream’ academia and the art market, he is ever mindful of bearing stewardship for his family, relatives, and honoring his culture.
Honoring his culture involves navigating the internal protection and continuation of his tribal ways with the external uplifting and recognition of his father’s Meskawki, and his mother’s Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) heritages. As a child Slick remembers his mother often telling him and his siblings that when they’d go to school, to not share details of their tribal ceremonies, “ the white man doesn’t understand the Indian. If you tell them anything, the first thing they will try to do is take it all away.” While respecting his parents ‘law' Slick recognized the spirituality and majesty that was manifested in his families’ songs, regalia, and ceremonial traditions. Julie was all about love and caring. She loved and cared deeply about all things family, and she was committed and continuous about showing that love. She was a devoted soul mate and partner to husband Duane for over 40 years. She was a loving and nurturing mother to her three children, as well as a caring and dedicated grandmother, sister, sister-in-law and aunt.
She was a friend to hundreds of people. If one includes her former students, that number becomes thousands. Her circles of friends include classmates grade one to 12 and the Class of at Fillmore High School; the community of Bardsdale Methodist Church; classmates at Fresno State University Class of ; the educational community of Ventura — where she taught for 36 years; her P.E.O. sisters of Ventura, Fillmore, and later of Mount Vernon, Wash.; friends she made while breeding golden retrievers — involving herself in dog obedience, dog agility, animal rescue, and Canine Companions spay and neuter clinics. She was involved in the art community of Ventura County and of Northwest Washington. And, she loved her dogs, of which there have been many.

Duane Michals (b. , McKeesport, PA) is one of the great photographic innovators of the last century, widely known for his work with series, multiple exposures, and text.
Michals first made significant, creative strides in the field of photography during the s. In an era heavily influenced by photojournalism, Michals manipulated the medium to communicate narratives. The sequences, for which he is widely known, appropriate cinema’s frame-by-frame format. Michals has also incorporated text as a key component in his works. Rather than serving a didactic or explanatory function, his handwritten text adds another dimension to the images’ meaning and gives voice to Michals’ singular musings, which are poetic, tragic, and humorous, often all at once.
Over the past five decades, Michals’ work has been exhibited in the United States and abroad. The Museum of Modern Art, New York, hosted Michals’ first solo exhibition (). In , The Morgan Library and Museum in New York exhibited a career retrospective of Michals'
