The Velvet Underground spent the early part of their career as the musical component of Pop artist and impresario Andy Warhol's s multi-media "happenings." In the following decades, however, the influence of the Velvets' sometimes druggy, sometimes aggressive sound would permeate virtually every "alternative" corner of popular music, laying the seeds for punk rock and opening up

To rock snobs, art-school students, and dads everywhere, the Velvet Underground are the cornerstone of rock and roll. They inspired bands like R.E.M. and Sonic Youth with their innovative style, which wedded avant-garde techniques to garage-band riffs and melodies. Younger listeners are as likely to know the Velvets from their needle drops in Wes Anderson movies (who could forget the use of “Stephanie Says” in The Royal Tenenbaums?) or their banana logo, which has had a second life as a trendy t-shirt.

After college, Reed worked as a songwriter for the bargain record label Pickwick Records, where he wrote songs like the dance-craze parody “The Ostrich” for imaginary in-house bands. Producers for the TV show American Bandstand heard “The Ostrich” and invited the band that reco

Inside the Birth of the Velvet Underground

To Lou Reed, the legendarily cranky singer-songwriter, Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony DeCurtis was a true rarity: a music journalist that Reed actually liked. The pair encountered each other many times over DeCurtis&#; decades as a writer and editor, and after Reed&#;s death in , DeCurtis turned his admiration for Reed into an excellent new biography, the massive Lou Reed: A Life, which is out now in paperback. In this exclusive excerpt, Reed is a literary-minded young man fresh out of Syracuse University, eager to explore New York&#;s sexual underground, and about to change rock & roll forever.

Along with his generally outrageous behavior and innate desire to shock, Reed displayed a characteristic savvy during his time at SU. His rebelliousness aside, Reed took care to avoid getting kicked out of school. He pushed the college to the limits of its tolerance, bu

A story in Interviewdeclared, Since the s, Lou Reed has arguably been one of the most influential figures in rock&#x;n&#x; roll. The mercurial Reed&#x;whose group The Velvet Underground may have been the first art-rock band and was certainly crucial to the development of today&#x;s alternative rock&#x;has pursued a very personal path in his solo career. Experimenting with everything from glam rock to pop to all-out noise, he has disregarded commercial considerations in the name of his own truths. Sometimes the definition of what rock and roll is caused me to be thought of in ways that are too confining, he commented in a Sire Records press biography, so sometimes it becomes easier to just think of it as&#x;Lou Reed Music.&#x;

Reed was born in and raised on Long Island, New York. He became infatuated with rock and roll and rhythm and blues during his teens. He wrote his own songs and performed with bands like the Shades during the s; he also frightened his parents with his behavior. A
