He’s the answer to a trivia question: Who was the last drummer to play with Prince in public?
He’s also the best St. Cloud-born musician who almost nobody in town knows anything about.
Say hello to Bobby Vandell — or, if you’re going to his show Sept. 30 at Pioneer Place on Fifth, just call him “Merle.”
“No one in St. Cloud has ever paid any attention to me,” said a laughing Vandell, who has the title role in "Sing Me Back Home — The Definitive Merle Haggard Tribute" at p.m. Sept.
“There’s no reason for anybody to pay attention to me.”
That last part is demonstrably false.
Vandell, 63, has been awarded five gold records and is a nine-time inductee into the Midwest Rock and Country Hall of Fame.
He spent almost 50 years drumming for a who’s who of performers ranging from Prince to Bonnie Raitt, Chuck Berry to Lipps Inc., in venues large and small around the world.
“He’s a great drummer,” St. Cloud guitarist Paul “Stretch” Diethelm said. “He’s a groove monster.”

In , when I first moved to DC, unsure of what I wanted to do with my life (something I still grapple with, 16 years later, with a PhD), I set up a website for TDC Productions, an informal production company my cousin, his friends and I, co-founded sometime in the mids. After the TDC crew dispersed in the mids, I was the only one consistently using the name. Unfortunately, it took me a few years to get any video production work, so the website turned into more of a blog and repository for other projects and events I was starting to put on around town. In , I started doing freelance writing for a briefly lived music and culture blog, and I remember the editor telling me that he liked my website, but he really had no idea what it was. Was it a music blog? Was it a comedy website? Was it a retrospective archive of some marginally funny DIY films my cousin and I had made over the previous decade (hindered, no doubt, by the lack of embeddable streaming way to share the films).
Nonetheless, I pushed on with the blog, using it as a way to keep generating what would, by the beginning of the s, be called content. Back then, mic
