According to court documents Richard McCroskey who is sometimes called Sam &#;Syko Sam&#; McCroskey was involved in a online relationship with sixteen year old Emma Niederbrock that was beginning to fizzle out. McCroskey who was a struggling Horrorcore Rapper would murder Mark Niederbrock, Debra S. Kelley, their daughter Emma Niederbrock and friend Melanie Wells.
The group had attended a concert and when Melanie mom was unable to contact her daughter she would phone the police who performed a wellness check at the Niederbrock residence and discovered the four bodies. The four victims had been hit with a maul while they were sleeping.

When Melanie Wells's mother finally contacted the Farmville police, two officers were sent to the Niederbrock-Kelly home. McCroskey opened the door and reassured the officers that the three women were out to the movies. The police bought the story, but when Wells's mother called again, the officers returned to the home. However, by then McCroskey had murdered Mark Niederbrock and left the crime scene, stealing the Reverend's car.
Within minutes, McCroskey wrecked the Honda. Police arrived to file a report, totally unaware, at that point, of the murders. McCroskey was released and caught a ride with the tow truck driver, then called a taxi for a ride to Richmond International Airport, which was about an hour's drive from Farmville. The murderer was at last heading home to California. Or so he thought. According to the taxi driver, Curtis Gibson, McCroskey "spoke calmly and never raised [any] suspicion." Gibson said that McCroskey told him Emma became angry with him when she caught him going through her phone and accused him of invading her privacy. FARMVILLE, Va. (CBS/AP) Sam "Syko Sam" McCroskey, who aspired to being a "horrorcore" rapper, pleaded guilty Monday to killing four people in central Virginia and was sentenced to life in prison.

McCroskey, of California, was charged with killing his girlfriend, year-old Emma Niederbrock; her parents, Presbyterian minister Mark Niederbrock and Longwood University professor Debra Kelley; and Emma's year-old friend, Melanie Wells of Inwood, , and faced two counts of first degree murder and two counts of capital murder, which could have meant the death penalty if he was convicted at trial.
His attorney, Cary Bowen, said after the hearing that the prospect of the death penalty was a major factor.
"Four bodies are pretty compelling evidence," Bowen said. "This is the kind of stuff that citizens any place in this country are terrified it could happen to them. This is the kind of case death penalties arise from."
Prosecutors said that the women were bludgeoned with a wood-splitting tool while they slept on Sept. 15, Mark Niederbrock was killed with the tool when he came to check on them, according to CBS affiliate WTVR.

Four people found slain in a small Virginia college town were bludgeoned to death, authorities said Tuesday, and the aspiring Castro Valley rapper suspected of killing them befriended two of the victims through a subculture of violent, macabre music.
Richard Alden Samuel McCroskey III, 20, is already charged in the killing of Mark Niederbrock, a pastor at a Presbyterian church in central Virginia. He's expected to face more charges in the future, after investigators sift through hundreds of pieces of forensic evidence.
Some of that evidence was retrieved from McCroskey's home in Castro Valley.
"We are going coast to coast on this investigation," Prince Edward County Commonwealth's Attorney Jim Ennis said.
Alameda County investigators were seen leaving McCroskey's home early Monday with more than a dozen paper bags and as well as a computer. They said they executed a search warrant at 1 a.m. on behalf of their Virginia counterparts.
