LDS Woman Who Performed on ABC's "Lawrence Welk Show" for 12 Years Shares How She Stood for Her Faith
What an example of sharing your faith and talents with the world.
Prior to graduating from Cleveland High School in California in , Sandi Jensen said she was prompted to attend Brigham Young University. She followed the counsel and it dramatically changed the course of her life.
Not only did she meet her husband, Brent Griffiths, in a freshman English class, but she was also mentored as a singer by Janie Thompson, legendary director of the BYU Student Program Bureau, a public relations arm of the university that spreads goodwill through entertainment.

It was Thompson who paired Sandi Jensen Griffiths with fellow student Sally Flynn, a union that eventually led to their becoming regulars as a vocal duo on "The Lawrence Welk Show" in Flynn married Clay Hart, a guitarist and country singer on the show, and after four years of performing on the show with Griffiths, Sally Flynn Hart left the show to pursue a solo career. Sandi Griffiths and her BYU singing partner, Sally Flynn (below) performed together at Disneyland, in Vietnam, and as regulars on the Lawrence Welk Show. After Flynn left, Griffiths continued with the show for several years before moving on to spend her full time caring for her family of eight children.
Sandi Jensen Griffiths (BA ’99) first became nationally known on the Lawrence Welk Show for her duets with her BYU singing partner, Sally Flynn (later Hart) (’68). But it was a solo experience in Salt Lake City that Griffiths counts among her happiest memories from the show.
“It was the early ’70s, and we were planning a Salt Palace show,” she explains. “I asked Lawrence Welk if I could sing a solo in Salt Lake City. He agreed, and
I prepared a medley of Primary songs that included ‘I Am a Child of God.’
I invited the audience to sing the last verse, and, upon finishing, the crowd erupted in an ovation. Afterward Mr. Welk stared at me strangely and asked, ‘Sandi, when was this a hit?’ He couldn’t believe he had somehow missed a popular song.”
He just didn’t know the Utah audience.

Sandi Jensen Griffiths is a nationally known singer from The Lawrence Welk Show. She and Brigham Young University singing partner Sally Flynn Hart performed with Janie Thompson’s Program Bureau through BYU and later auditioned for Lawrence Welk at the only open audition he ever held. Sandi and Sally were selected to replace the departing Lennon Sisters. They sang together until Sally left the show in to pursue a solo career. Sandi then became part of a popular trio that featured Gail Farrell and Mary Lou Metzger. She continued to sing regularly on the show until , and then sang occasionally until She appeared in both Welk Christmas Reunion specials (, ). By she and husband, Brent, were the parents of four children. They later added four more children to their family. Later they added two more individuals whom they consider their children. Most of their children sing and her daughters join her for performances.
Sandi was born on August 1, , in Los Angeles. At age six she made her television debut on the Art Linkletter television program, House Party. At BYU, she met Sally Flynn, and the duet was also part of a USO group touring Vietnam.

Biography
Born in Salinas, California, she grew up in Durant, Oklahoma as an only child on her father's cattle ranch. She learned music from her mother who taught her piano lessons while her father taught her to ride horses. She began to perform publicly at age six at rodeos and talent shows, in church, and on pickup beds on the back of trucks stumping for local political candidates. She also learned how to sing gospel music from her grandmother. While attending the University of Tulsa, majoring in piano performance, she took part in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant and won in talent and swimsuit competitions. She also attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York during the summer to further hone her talents as a piano player.
After graduating magna cum laude in , she flew out to Los Angeles, California to become a pre-school music teacher, but decided to audition for Lawrence Welk since he and his band performed every Saturday night at the Hollywood Palladium.
