Pope Martin IV sent Philip Benizi of the Order of Servites (Servants of Mary) as his personal ambassador to try to bring peace to the angry rebels. While addressing crowds of malcontents one day, he was dragged off the rostrum, beaten with clubs, and pelted with rocks. Peregrine knocked down Benizi with a vicious blow to the face.
Young Peregrine was stricken with remorse. He cast himself at the feet of the bruised and bleeding priest and asked for his forgiveness. Benizi granted it with a smile. From that moment, Peregrine became a staunch champion of Benizi. He heeded Philip’s suggestion and often prayed in Our Lady’s chapel in the Cathedral.

Peregrine Laziosi was born of a wealthy family at Forli, Italy, in As a youth he was active in politics as a member of the anti-papal party. During one uprising, which the Pope sent St. Philip Benizi to mediate, Philip was struck in the face by Peregrine. When Philip offered the other cheek, Peregrine was so overcome that he repented and converted to Catholicism. Following the instructions of the Virgin Mary received in a vision, Peregrine went to Siena and joined the Servites. It is believed that he never allowed himself to sit down for thirty years, while as far as possible, observing silence and solitude. Sometime later, Peregrine was sent to Forli to found a new house of the Servite Order. An ideal priest, he had a reputation for fervent preaching and being a good confessor. When he was afflicted with cancer of the foot and amputation had been decided upon, he spent the night before the operation, in prayer. The following morning he was completely cured. This miracle caused his reputation to become widespread. During the interdict of Pope Martin IV against Forli, Philip Benizi, then prior General of the Servite Order, visited Forli and exhorted its citizens to peace and submission to the Pope. Philip was driven out of the city with insults and violence by a gang of young men, among whom was an eighteen year old by the name of Peregrine.
Peregrine was well past middle age when he developed cancer; it showed itself as an ulcerative condition to his leg which refused to heal. The only hope of saving his life would be to amputate his leg. The night before the scheduled operation, Peregrine prayed with fervent faith before the image of the crucified Christ and was miraculously healed.
