Scott Hamilton is the premier 'mainstream' saxophonist of today. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, in , he came along at the time when the kind of jazz he loved-the small-group swing of such great stylists as Illinois Jacquet and Eddie Lockjaw Davis-was out of fashion, and largely out of the public ear. Scott's handsome sound and impeccable phrasing were a rare commodity among young jazzmen. So when he signed to Concord Records, and began making albums for label boss and mainstream advocate Carl Jefferson, it caused surprise and excitement among both devotees of the style, and in the wider musical world.

His first Concord set, [Scott Hamilton is A Good Wind Who IS Blowing Us No Ill] was made in and took it’s title from an admiring remark from veteran jazz critic Leonard Feather. But it became only the first in a long and memorable series of albums for the label, which now stretches to nearly 30 releases They feature Scoff's playing in all kinds of settings-with small groups, string orchestras, in partnership with such distinguished players as Ruby Braff and Dave McKenna, and in many other situations. Tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton emerged as a major jazz talent in the late s by bucking the trend. Whereas many jazz artists had gravitated toward free jazz in the s and jazz fusion in the s, Hamilton looked back toward swing and bop from the s, s, and s. Grounded in the classic American songbook, his style embraced the lyricism of Ben Webster and the passion of John Coltrane. "What I love about his consistent tenor sax playing," noted John Barrett Jr. in Jazz Review, "is his ability to present these old standards the way the songs were originally intendeda refreshing change as everything is new again." Despite his dedication to old styles, however, Hamilton has excelled by leaving his own mark on yesterday's standards. Mark Miller in the Toronto Globe and Mail noted that "Hamilton has shaped his formative influences into a forthright style of his own."

Scott Hamilton Biography:

A complete anomaly, tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton emerged on the music scene at the peak of the fusion movement with a sound and sensibility steeped in the Swing era tradition of such tenor giants as Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Chu Berry and Don Byas.

In (the year that Weather Report dominated the airwaves with Joe Zawinul's monster hit, "Birdland"), the year- old Rhode Island native snuck in under the radar with his cryptically titled debut as a leader, Scott Hamilton Is a Good Wind Who Is Blowing Us No Ill (a title inspired by a line from the eminent jazz critic Leonard Feather, who was paraphrasing the lyric to Billie Holiday's lament "Ill Wind" in praising the young saxophonist).

Against all odds, and a deluge of synth-dominated music that prevailed at that time, Hamilton carved out a straight ahead niche for himself with his warm, lyrical tenor lines and effortless sense of swing.

Years before Wynton Marsalis came along to spearhead the Young Lions movement of the s, Hamilton was already rekindling an interest in acoustic jazz with his own purist approach to the music.

With uncanny consistency, he has continued

World-renowned tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton of Providence was born in He began his career playing blues harp and alto sax, but by age 16 he’d become serious about the tenor. After honing his style with his first jazz group, The Hamilton-Bates Blue Flames, he moved to New York in and hasn’t looked back since. His style, while deeply rooted in the pre-Bop sounds of Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young, was already fully formed and seemed unique and all his own during the days of free jazz and early fusion. Through his mentor Roy Eldridge, with whom he’d played in Boston the previous year, he was welcomed into the fold by the old guard and worked with Anita O’Day, Hank Jones, Benny Goodman, Illinois Jacquet, Woody Herman and another of his mentors, Ruby Braff.
