Robert C. O'Brien In real life, Robert C. O'Brien was Robert Leslie Conly. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, attended Williams College and graduated from the Universtiy of Rochester. While there he studied piano at Eastman School of Music, and at one time considered being a musician. Instead, he became an editor and writer for Newsweek magazine from to , and for Pathfinder from to From until the time of his death in he was employed as a writer and editor by the National Geographic Magazine. He made his home in New York City before and in Washington, D.C. after that. He also had a home in Morgan County, West Virginia, after , a place he loved and visited as often as he could. He was married and the father of one son and three daughters. His books include The Silver Crown, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which won the Newbery Award, and A Report From Group His last book, Z is for Zachariah was nearly completed at the time of his death; the last few chapters were written from notes by this wife and one of his daughters.

Robert Leslie Conly - who went by the pen name Robert C. O’Brien - was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Williams College and graduated from the University of Rochester and received a degree in English in He was the third of five children of a well-educated, literate family. At school he was admired for his wit, became editor of the school paper, and showed a great facility with words, especially in writing verse. Originally he wanted to become a pianist and studied at the Julliard School of Music in New York City. However, he changed his mind and decided to study English at the University of Rochester and got a BA degree in English in After graduation, he worked first for Newsweek magazine, and later, after his marriage in , as a reporter and editor for the Washington Times-Herald. From until his death, he worked for the National Geographic magazine. He only started writing fiction in the last ten years of his life.

His first, The Silver Crown (; rev ) [see Checklist below], is a sometimes frightening, complex fantasy about the kidnapping of a young girl by a king who in turn is ruled by a malignant Machine. Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH (; vt The Secret of NIMH), which won the Newbery Medal, tells of a group of fugitive Rats who have escaped from a laboratory where their Intelligence has been enhanced (see Uplift), and have established an UndergroundKeep; with the help of Mrs Frisby, a field Mouse, they later found an independent colony, being determined not to batten on humans. The treatment is realistic and without a trace of whimsy; the tale was filmed as TheSecret of NIMH () directed by Don Bluth. The NIMH of the title alludes to the US National Institute of Mental Health, where Dr John B Calhoun conducted ss research on mouse and rat population dynamics that inspired the novel.
