Mykola Leontovych was born in in Podillia into a family of a rural priest. Though destined for the priesthood, he declined to pursue ordination. Due to financial constraints, his father enrolled him at the Sharhorod Primary Theological School with full board. Subsequently, young Mykola continued his education at the Podillia Theological Seminary in Kamianets-Podilskyi.
