Walter Garland was born in Cowpens, SC on November 11, Cowpens is a small town just northeast of Spartanburg not far from the North Carolina border. It was an area dominated by hardcore country music, which had quite an impact upon young Hank. Chet Atkins, who worked closely with Garland through the years, recalls that "Hank said his first inspiration was the Carter Family. He heard Maybelle picking the 'Wildwood Flower' when he was a little kid, and he dreamed that night he was playing it and he couldn't wait, of course to get a guitar. Garlands father bought him a used Encore steel-string when Hank was six, and young Garland began taking lessons from one Mr. Fowler, who taught him basic chords.

When guitarist Hank Garland's '59 Chev station wagon spun out on a road in Tennessee and hammered into a tree in September it left him unconscious in hospital for weeks.
And although he recovered and lived another 43 years he never went back to work . . . but what a career he'd had since he'd arrived in Nashville as a precociously gifted teenager 13 years before the crash.
At the time of the accident he'd spent three years playing on sessions for Elvis, Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, Ronnie Hawkins and many others.
He'd also crossed over from pop and country into jazz and recorded an album – Jazz Winds from a New Direction for Columbia, the first jazz album recorded in Nashville -- with Joe Morello (Brubeck's quartet drummer), bassist Joe Benjamin and vibes player Gary Burton.
He helped design a guitar for Gibson.
He was known for his speed and assured attack (he'd been discovered as year old playing as a guest at the Grand Ole Opry) and counted among his admirers Chet Atkins who considered him the best of the Nashville session players.

Now that star Paul Howard, leader of The Arkansas Cotton Pickens, could not remember the invitation he'd extended - in person in Spartanburg, South Carolina and then by phone-to young Walter Louis "Hank" Garland. His parents, skeptical at the invitations, had nonetheless brought their son to Nashville. Only when Hank's father reminded Howard of the phone calls did he remember: On tour, Howard had stopped at Alexander's Music Store in Spartanburg where Hank was buying a guitar string. The clerks praised the teenager's playing and handed him a guitar. After hearing him play, Howard offered him a job on the spot.
That night on the Opry, young Hank Garland's intense electric guitar boogie instrumental blew away Howard, his musicians and the Opry audience.
