The Rise of the Minamoto: Japan’s First Shogunate

Japan, For decades, the Chrysanthemum Throne had been under the tentative sway of two rival families: the Taira and the Minamoto, both of them vying for control of the Imperial Court and with it, power over the whole of Japan. The Taira at the time was by far the most dominant power, having seeded family members throughout the court in positions of power and influence, as well as owning land all across the country. The Minamoto had been largely disgraced because they sided with an unfavored contender for the throne and were  exiled from the capital.

The Taira Rise to Power

The Taira clan consisted of members of the royal family who had been stripped of their rank and given positions of nobility by Emperor Kanmu, who reigned from to CE. This was done to prevent confusion when passing rulership down. Otherwise, the grandsons and relatives of previous Emperors would potentially compete for succession by claiming legitimacy. Of course, this ended up happening anyway despite his efforts. Even an Emperor who abdicated the throne could still wield enormous influence, making their endorsement invaluable for aspiring nobles.

About Kamakura Figures

  • Minamoto no Yoritomo Founder of the first samurai government in Japanese history who established the Kamakura Shogunate

"Minamoto no Yoritomo was a historical figure who founded the Kamakura period, standing at the pinnacle of samurai in the Kanto region and building the foundations of the Kamakura shogunate. His life is full of incredible comebacks from adversity. Yoritomo, who was born in present-day Aichi Prefecture, was exiled to Izu Province (present-day part of Shizuoka Prefecture) after being defeated in a civil war called the Heiji Rebellion. The Heiji Rebellion was the first major power struggle between the two major samurai groups, the Minamoto clan (Minamoto clan) and the Heike clan, and was a turning point in Yoritomo's career. While living in exile in Izu Province, Yoritomo met Masako, the daughter of Hojo Tokimasa, and this relationship later became the impetus for the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate.

Yoritomo succeeded in gathering the support of the samurai and gathering forces to oppose the Heike. This enabled the establishment of the shogunate in Kamakura. His historical achievements are still alive in many of Kamakura

He sits proudly astride his dappled horse, wearing full armor over his blue robes, a quiver of arrows at his back. Two attendants accompany him, one carrying his bow and the other holding a naginata. Minamoto no Yoshiie (源義家)

MINAMOTO no Yoshiie was a busho (Japanese military commander) in the Heian period and the grandson of MINAMOTO no Yorinobu of the Kawachi-Genji (Minamoto clan). He was also known by his alias, Hachimantaro Yoshiie. As the ancestor of MINAMOTO no Yoritomo, who established the Kamakurabakufu (military government) and Takauji ASHIKAGA who founded the Muromachi bakufu, he was often portrayed as a hero by later generations and there are many anecdotes about him.

He served as a guard for the Emperor Shirakawa during his imperial visits and suppressed rebelling Mount Hiei monks, but after becoming Mutsu no kuni no kami (the governor of Mutsu Province), he interfered in the internal conflict of the Kiyohara clan, triggering the Later Three Years' War which, although he sought official post-war consent, was declared 'a private feud' by the court.

For the next ten years he was under house arrest, but he was allowed to visit the imperial palace with Emperor Shirakawa's consent, although Udaijin (Minister of the Right) Nakamikado, also as known as FUJIWARA no Munetada, wrote in his diary, "Chuyu-ki" (dated October 23, ), 'Minamoto no Asomi (second highest of
