Early Life
Sanger was born Margaret Higgins on September 14, , in Corning, New York. She was one of 11 children born into a Roman Catholic working-class Irish American family. Her mother, Anne, had several miscarriages, and Sanger believed that all of these pregnancies took a toll on her mother's health and contributed to her early death at the age of 40 (some reports say 50). The family lived in poverty as her father, Michael, an Irish stonemason, preferred to drink and talk politics than earn a steady wage.
Seeking a better life, Sanger attended Claverack College and Hudson River Institute in She went on to study nursing at White Plains Hospital four years later. In , she married William Sanger, an architect. The couple eventually had three children together.

Nursing Career
Margaret resumed her nursing career by working as a visiting nurse in some of the poorest areas of New York where she helped deliver babies and nursed new mothers back to health. She saw the heartbreak caused by unwanted pregnancies and botched abortions. The women desperately wanted contraceptive advice but were unable to get it because the law prohibited contraception. Finally, when a woman died in childbirth after begging for birth control advice, Sanger decided she had to do something to help women improve their lives through birth control. Sanger had found her calling and began her lifelong mission. For a year, she studied everything she could find about birth control and even traveled to Europe to study family planning. In , she felt that she was prepared to take action. Her plan for action had three parts. First was education of the public. She started her own magazine, Woman Rebel, that contained articles on birth control and related subjects. Margaret Sanger was an early champion in the struggle for women to gain control of their own reproductive systems. She opened the first birth control clinic in America, braved frequent arrest and censorship by civil authorities and lifelong persecution by the Roman Catholic Church, and founded the two organizations that later merged into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
She was born into an Irish Catholic family in Corning, New York, the sixth of eleven children. Her father, Michael Hennessy Higgins, was an immigrant stonecutter and a decorated veteran of the American Civil War. Her mother, Anne Purcell Higgins, was a sickly, passive, obedient woman, completely devoted to the idea that the husband was the natural lord and master of the house. Margaret never accepted that idea.
The family fortunes declined after when Michael, a political radical and iconoclast, alienated the local Catholic constituency by engaging the atheist socialist Robert Ingersoll to speak at a public meeting in Corning.
