The five-word quote above is taken from a Toronto TELEGRAM newspaper review of Judy Garland’s December concert at Canada’s O’Keefe Center, and it’s the same basic response she won virtually all of her performing life. As a child in s vaudeville, she was defined as "the little girl with the great big voice." As the preeminent star of musical motion pictures in the s, she was known as "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's greatest asset." In the s -- when she returned to revue work on stage and began appearing on television -- they billed her as "Miss Show Business." And when she began to tour in concert in , the posters simply read, "JUDY/World's Greatest Entertainer." 

Even now, decades later, it would be difficult to argue with any of those facts.

Birth and Early Years

Born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, , Judy Garland was the daughter of Ethel and Frank Gumm, both vaudeville performers who got together and settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to manage a movie theater. At just 2 years old, Garland began her career on the stage after appearing with her family to sing the chorus of “Jingle Bells” during a Christmas show at the family’s movie theater.

When she was 4, the family moved to Los Angeles County after rumors of Frank partaking in a gay extramarital affair came to light. Shortly after relocating, the family opened another movie theater, and Ethel got to work helping her precocious daughters—Mary Jane, Dorothy Virginia, and Frances Ethel—break into show business as musical trio The Gumm Sisters.

Following a handful of film roles and a slew of tour performances as The Gumm Sisters, the group officially changed their name to The Garland Sisters after singer George Jessel suggested the trio take on a “more appealing” name. Early Life

Actress and singer Garland was born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, , in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Garland, the star of many classic musical films, was known for her tremendous talent and troubled life. The daughter of vaudeville professionals, she started her stage career as a child.

Garland was called "Baby Gumm" and sang "Jingle Bells" at her first public performance at the age of two and a half. With her two older sisters, Garland soon began performing as part of the Gumm Sisters.
