Nicht nur John Neumeier ist jetzt 85 Jahre alt, sondern auch Antoinette Sibley, die eine Muse des Choreografen Kenneth MacMillan und vor 50 Jahren auch die erste „Manon“ in MacMillans gleichnamigem Ballett war. Gestern Abend, an ihrem Jubiläumsgeburtstag, war sie als Ehrengast im Londoner Covent Garden wieder mit auf der Bühne: beim Schlussapplaus, zusammen mit den Stars und dem Ensemble vom Royal Ballet, das mit Fumi Kaneko in der Titelrolle eine fabelhafte Vorstellung mit „Manon“ abgeliefert hatte. Koen Kessels dirigierte mit viel Fingerspitzengefühl die opulente Musik von Jules Massenet, die von Martin Yates neu orchestriert wurde. Und mit Superstar Vadim Muntagirov als Des Grieux an ihrer Seite gab Fumi Kaneko eine bewunderungswürdige, seelenvolle Manon ab, die erst in ihrer Unschuld, dann in ihrer großen Liebe und schließlich in ihrem Überlebenskampf zu Tränen rührte.

Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet is a narrative masterpiece, distilling in its structure and choreography all the passion and ultimate tragedy of Shakespeare’s doomed young lovers.
Add to that Prokofiev’s magnificent, eloquent score, and it’s easy to see why Romeo and Juliet is one of the best loved works in The Royal Ballet’s repertoire. Having seen it countless times, I didn’t expect to be surprised, much less blown away, when I took my seat at the Royal Opera House for a matinée towards the end of October.
The lovers were to be danced by William Bracewell, a stylish and very affecting Romeo, and in only her second performance as Juliet the Japanese dancer Fumi Kaneko, with whose work as a technically accomplished dancer in both classical and contemporary repertoire I was familiar.

In a lifetime of watching dance, many performances have, with time, slipped entirely out of my mind. Others remain as cherished, if sometimes hazy, memories. But a few have become imprinted indelibly on my mind and soul.
One such was The Royal Ballet principal Fumi Kaneko’s debut as MacMillan’s Juliet, almost four years ago, a performance of rare emotional impact beside William Bracewell’s tender Romeo.
I was, therefore, all agog to watch Fumi Kaneko’s return as Juliet in the current 60th anniversary run of Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpiece; an anticipation further fuelled by the fact that her Romeo would be her life partner, Vadim Muntagirov, another Royal Ballet shining star.
