The Stonebreakers by Courbet
Courbet went to Paris at the age of 20 to study art. His early works were Romantic, but he soon changed to a more realistic style. Many of his paintings, however, continued to show his essentially Romantic nature even as he attempted to portray accurately the world around him. Such famous works as Young Bather (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City) and A Spanish Woman(Philadelphia Museum of Art) are Realist in subject matter, but Romantic in mood. During his lifetime, however, he was considered a strict Realist, and Young Batheroutraged spectators because it simply

French painter Gustave Courbet () was influential in leading the Realist movement of 19th century French painting. Realism as applied to the visual arts refers to a style that describes the simple fact of what the eyes can observe, as opposed to romanticism which was a style that dominated the French art world of the time, and was underscored by strong emotion such as trepidation, terror, or awe. In contrast, the Realist of 19th century France abandoned the overstated emotionalism which was depicted in much of the artwork of that time period, and instead focused on painting subjects that were considered uncouth, such as peasants and the working poor. Gustave Courbet holds a significant place in 19th century French art history as a trend setter, and as a painter who was unafraid to make controversial cultural commentary with his artwork.

Summary of Gustave Courbet

Gustave Courbet was central to the emergence of Realism in the midth century. Rejecting the classical and theatrical styles of the French Academy, his art insisted on the physical reality of the objects he observed - even if that reality was plain and blemished. A committed Republican, he also saw his Realism as a means to champion the peasants and country folk from his home town. He has long been famous for his response to the political upheavals which gripped France in his lifetime, and he would die in exile in Switzerland when he was found responsible for the cost of rebuilding of Paris' Vendome Column. More recently, however, historians have also seen his work as an important prelude to other artists of early modernism such as Édouard Manet and Claude Monet.

Accomplishments

  • Courbet's Realism can be understood as part of the wider inquiry into the physical world that occupied science in the 19th century. But in his own realm of art, he was most inspired by his distaste for strictures of the French Academy. He rejected Classical or Romantic treatments and instead took humble scenes of country life - subjects usually considered the stuff of
