Betty White: Remarkable Moments in an Extraordinary Life

January 2,
A lovely valentine of a book to a lovely lady who has now left us just shy of her th birthday. This book is chockablock with wonderful photographs, interesting tidbits of Betty White's long -- and highly successful -- career, and interviews with people who knew and worked with her. The book is divided by decade, which is helpful, but the structure otherwise is a bit odd: Each decade begins with a two-page spread that provides an overview of the decade, but, unfortunately, 'spills the beans,' as it were, with much of the content to follow in that section, which lends a lamentable repetitiveness to some of the material. I also found it rather odd that no specific mention (except in retrospect) of Allen Ludden's death was made. (Was this the subject's request? Was it the author's misplaced reticence?) All in all, though, these are minor quibbles. From all accounts, Betty White was one person who was, in fact, as good and kind and special as she seemed on the screen. This book is highly recommended: to fans of Betty White, most certainly, but also to all those who might be interested in tracing the history of telev

Here We Go Again: My Life in Television

October 8,
I knew Betty White went back a few years, that she was part of the Mary Tyler Moore set, but I didn't realize she went all the way back to the very dawn of television! Radio, even!

Here We Go Again (probably a reference to this being her second or third biography) is a really nice and compact look at the history of television programing, especially in the early years. It's short, which is to its merit, and it is sensibly focused on White's career, but nevertheless I learned a thing or two about tv, and that's something I didn't expect to get out of a slim Betty White bio!

I also didn't realize that she was such a model of feminism. I don't know for certain, but I'd be surprised to hear that she was a card-carrying member of the movement and that she marched with Gloria Steinem (certainly nothing like that is mentioned in this book), however, White did her part for women's rights simply by working. Her career came about at a time when women weren't expected to have careers. She went through two men who wanted her to stay at home in order to pursue a life in showbiz. She was good at entertaining and so that's what she did, da

Here We Go Again 1
Once I was a legitimate, card-carrying AFRA member, I worked The Great Gildersleeve several times, sometimes with a line or two, sometimes just to furnish “crowd noise.” There is a happy tag to this tale: Years later, when we were doing my second series, Date with the Angels, we had occasion to hire two additional writers—one Bill Kelsay, and the other none other than my benefactor, Fran Van Hartesveldt. He was a dear, silly, talented man, and whenever he’d hear me telling anyone how much I owed him, he’d say, “The moral of the story, boys and girls, is never walk—always take the elevator!”

By my next radio commercial, I had graduated from just one word—this time I got to sing. It was for American Airlines, and the song was lilting, to say the least:

Why not fly to Meheeco Ceety
You weel like the treep, ee’s so preety.
