Picasso et la joie de vivre en Méditerranée
Picasso né à Malaga en occupe une place singulière et unique dans le XXème siècle. Comment ne pas évoquer à son propos la puissance d'un génie qui plie son existence à son art sans oublier de vivre et la longévité d'un homme conservant dans l'oeil une inépuisable fraîcheur, adoucie par la joie de vivre de ses dernières années passées dans le midi de la France ?
Au cours de sa vie il séjourne à de multiples reprises aux abords de la Grande Bleue entre Barcelone et Cannes. A partir de l'été il retrouve le chemin du midi et vit définitivement entre la Côte d'azur et la Campagne Aixoise.

This work, obviously a parody of Henri Matisse's celebrated work Bonheur de Vivre (), is often read as a celebration of peace. Henri Matisse lyrical work features nubile girls dancing and playing pipes in an idyllic setting as long, sensual curvaceous lines flow through the composition. Picasso's copy is more overtly mythological, featuring with pipe-playing fauns and dancing creatures. However, he captures Matisses's lyricism in the extended swirling lines of the figures, whose forms appear to grow organically like flowers moving upwards towards the Mediterranean sun.
Picasso had finally returned to his favored French Riviera to enjoy freedom from Occupation as well as burgeoning relationship with a young French artist, Francoise Gilot, whom he painted as a flower in She is possibly the model for the central creature of this work, with its long flowing hair. The couple visited Matisse in Nice - it was probably Matisse's request to paint Francoise with green hair that provoked Picasso to copy his rival's earlier work with this large x cm oil on fibreboard.

Composition
Trois plans s’étirent sur la toile.
Au premier plan : sont allongés une allégorie de la musique et un couple enlacé
Au second plan : s’étire une vénus anadyomène devant laquelle se tient un personnage accroupi (comme un coquillage) et, en retrait, un couple de muses enlacées. Ces personnages occupent la gauche du tableau. Au centre deux vénus alanguies l’une allongée tourne de dos, l’autre à demi relevée et déhanchée retient sa chevelure dans un geste très sensuel. Sur la droite du tableau un berger (allégorie de la musique) joue de la flûte debout.
Au troisième plan, un groupe de danseurs forment une ronde au milieu de la toile.
La ligne d’horizon qui s’étire en bleu et violet dans le fond du tableau représente une rivière surmontée d’un ciel rose qui ferme la composition.
La rivière est la seule ligne droite du tableau.
